Who is Justus Kashoma?

Grace Matsiko & Robert Mukombozi

Kampala

Mr Justus Kashoma, the alleged mastermind of the attempted fraud at Stanbic Bank last week, has cultivated an image of flamboyance and generosity. Friends talk about his lavish lifestyle and taste for designer suits, perfumes and the good life spent in casinos and discotheques.

And yet, until his arrest last Thursday at the Garden City Mall in Kampala, little was known about the man, his life or his almost sudden appearance on Kampala’s A-list about two years ago.

Relatives say Kashoma is in his early 30s but the businessman boasts of political connections in the government and Ankole kingdom, where he has earned himself a title of ‘Prince Justus’. His lineage is from the Buhweju chiefdom.

He is the owner of Kashoma Group of companies, a Kamwokya-based firm comprising five companies that claims to have branches in UK, US and Sweden. In these firms, he handles any business that comes his way, a former business associate who declined to be disclosed for fear of hurting their relationship, said.

According to the company website, Kashoma is a real estate dealer and money lender. He hires and sells security equipment. The same group also has a section dealing in Information Communication and Technology (ICT) services, VIP guard services, armed escort of valuables, research, foods and beverages and crime prevention among others.

Kashoma Group says on its website that it also provides vetting services to people who intend to recruit “honest and required” staff. The Company further says its research department keeps a data bank on problems associated with insecurity, proliferation of firearms and its impact.

Few details, however, are available about the extent of his business empire, or his worth. He said earlier this week that he has withdrawn higher sums of money from his accounts than the Shs10 billion that is now under investigation, but Stanbic Bank officials have declined to discuss their customer’s financial history or details.

The company website, where he is described as its Chief Executive Officer, is like a family platform stuffed with photographs of his wedding to Ms Susan Kasingye, a city lawyer. The lavish reception that was hosted at Serena Hotel in Kampala was attended by big shots in government and security institutions.

Sources who attended the wedding say the British Conservative Party, for whom he worked as an activist during his time in UK, was represented by three party members. This, like many stories around Mr Kashoma, could not be independently verified.

Mr Kashoma, who was born to a humble family, grew up in Nakasero, an up market suburb in Kampala under the guardianship of Lt. Col. Akanga Byaruhanga, who took him on after the death of his father, one Mzee Kabundamu, in the early 1990s. Col. Byaruhanga is a former Presidential Guard Brigade (PGB) commander.

Mr Kashoma studied at Shimoni Demonstration School for his Primary education, where he was elected a head boy. He later joined Budo Junior School. Former classmates say that even at the tender age, he had special interest in business.

“While some of us thought about pancakes and sweets, Kashoma put in a bid to supply ties and uniforms, which shocked the school administration,” said the former classmate said, who could not tell whether the budding businessman won the contract.

Mr Kashoma went to Kings’ College Buddo for his O’ and A level before he was sponsored by State House to go to University in the UK to study business.

Mr Kashoma hails from Kazo, Kiruhura District but bought a house in Isingiro where his mother, Ms Perusi Kabundama, currently lives.

While in UK, Mr Kashoma became an activist of the British Conservative Party, sources said. It is because of his activism, that he approached former British Secretary of Defense Mr. Michael Portillo for employment in his office, where he reportedly worked for a long time. Ugandans living in London say he lived a luxurious life, far removed from the penny-wise ways of most students in the British capital.

His links to former health minister Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi, who police have expressed interest in interviewing over the case, are unclear; the politician says Mr Kashoma, whom he knows socially, wanted to buy land from him in Nyabushozi.

Now living off the state as a suspected robbery mastermind, Mr Kashoma told Daily Monitor while at the Jinja Road police cells that he was being framed by individuals he has been wrestling for business opportunities.

With his day in court, Mr Kashoma will be able to defend himself against the allegations but for many in the public, it will also be a chance to learn more about what would have been the largest bank heist in Uganda’s recent history, according to police, and a tycoon who apparently came in from the cold to become one of the hottest items on Kampala’s social scene.

These events show that there is something wrong with our country- people always put blame on others- but in the Kashoma case there are too many coincidences to be ignored if the are true- allegations that Kashoma wanted to hire Hon. Banyenzaki's car before the incident,Kashoma speaks to Muhwezi before incidence,Mbabazi has dinner with Kashoma the previous night. Let us wait for the JUSTICE system to tell us the truth.

Jesus! If what Hon. Banyenzaki says is true, then I rest my case. Apparently, this Kashoma boy called Banyenzaki some days before their attempted heist. The story goes: Kashoma calls the “Rebel MP” and tells him that he needs to hire his trendy car for a self-drive around town! Good enough, the good honorable declines, saying that he can’t because he is away in his village. Apparently the deal was to use his car in this attempted “Bank robbery”, so that they pin the “Rebel MP”. Another story goes that days before the scum, the same Kashoma had called Hon. Jim Muhewzi, claiming that he had been informed that Jim had a piece of land he was selling. Now we hear that police has evidence against Jim in this “Illusion” of a heist. What’s going on here?

This one stinks to high heavens, this one is a pure characteristic of a MAFIA. You dont need to be an aeronautical engineer to identify this one as a pure Mafia and am almost sure he is being used to fight in the NSSF war.
Actually these things have been happening since our MAFIA govt came to power but now that they are fighting each other we are shown what normally has been taking place behind the scenes.

What has this got to do with how Uganda is governed ? This appears to be a conman in need of quick cash, with apparently little education, who was living a playboy lifestyle. The perpetual misappropriation of national NSSF funds by politicians and technocrats who hold high public offices is of paramount importance than a diversionary incident of bank robbers.
If this dude was so connected how come couldn't find other more "legimate" ways to make money ?

What a waste remembering my days in Nairobi the students from Kings college were the best at Nairobi University they gave the Kenyans a good run. The many I know here in the US are professional at the top of their game.
A lesson to the young Budonians please do not bring shame to the best school we have. A Budonian medical doctor was recently awarded a fellow honor recorganized as the best in internal medicine in the USA.

30 years old and u have made more money than those who have been in business longer than u. As an auditor it is impossible unless u are involved in drug money or 419 (nigerian term). These people are thieves should be made an example of to control the corruption eating up the once beautiful country.Convict them and throw away the key. Nobody envy thieves we know them. We want them mobbed.

Am surprised to find that there are some Ugandans defending Kashoma. Which kind of evidence do you want, follow the story carefully,Kashoma is a thief. Our country may not develop if we still have people to sympathize with thieves like Kashoma. He used advanced methods, thats why many people dont understand the nature of thefty.Am an electronic engineer,Kashoma is the greatest thief with respect to his crime of hacking. In monetory institutions,Hackers are dangerous like HIV.

I am really surprised by this article. A small question. How much money do you have on your account? Who has ever been stopped to withdraw any amount of money from his account. What's wrong with Ugandans? We have failed to know that Uganda is a capitalist nation where there is "survival for the fittest". I am not seeing any case with Kashoma. Let the laws do their own.
Uganda should be happy to have such a people.
Isn't this the suspicion of overstaying on power? Where is it written that old people are the ones supposed to;
-rule/govern the country
-become rich in the country
-be knowledgeable in the country and
-be wise enough to have all they can afford in the country?
I argue President Museveni to advocate for the release of Kashoma from prison. This is the type of people we want in Uganda.
I think they are fulfilling governments plans of investors. Who can tell me where the money these investors invest in Uganda come from?

Two things about we Africans that i fail to understand. Has any one of you ever asked why Africans never got together to fight against slave traders, and instead helped them capture their own kind. That is the same symptom now. Take a look at this whole bank robbery issue, just because this one man, out of his own sweat and blood, ammases a fortune while still young, he is a thief, what is wrong with us. Do we need to condemn all rich people because they are doing better than us economically. It is that jealousy that will never make us idependent as Africans, and it is that jealousy at the same time that will keep us disunited for generations to come. Another issue is, cant anyone see this is a diversion from the NSSF saga. If you have a little brains, please see beyond what your eyes can see. Do not allow your selves to be fooled like sheep heading to the slaugher house.

Its very important now more than ever for all Ugandans to read widely and find out about the status of their country. Material is widely available on the web;may that is when reality will sink in that we are such a poor country. You get young people on Kampala streets drooling about the wealth of these rogues and counting their cars forgetting that its you who are oiling their engines.
Its either the money that has been secured as soft loans for poverty alleviation or for maralia eradication and its all on our heads

One thing you must remember is that even if this money is swindled each one of us or our kids will have to pay back.
My point is how do you explain some body withdrawing £3m in one day in such a small economy???

Akanyijuka said at 02 Oct 2008, 00:20
please stop defending kashoma because how comes his two prados were caught.do you really think it was a coincidence for his two parados to be packed at the scenerio the time and date of the attempetd robbery/fraud?
i dont even think you can connect it to Amama mbabazi.ugandas watch. we have to wait and see what comes out.its also funny that he held a meeting with Muhwezi only to buy his land.OBWENTAMA YANGYE EBUZIRE NIBWO EMBWA YAWE ENIRE EBYOYA.runyankole saying which means when i lost my sheep thats when your dog defected the wool.

Hope having all that money it was all depending on how he spend and save, and i think no one can know how much some one is surposed to have. remember u make money and money makes more money, so that guy is innocent.

I still believe that it's much too early to start making conclusions. You could be right with all your assertions but also wrong. so it would be ideal to try and again trust the judiciary with this balance and to take the positives out of this. every ones likes being rich remember including you.the guy is yet a suspect.i wish you luck boss.
Charles said at 01 Oct 2008, 19:59
What did Kashoma said? Was he drawing his own money? If so, why arrest him?
It will look bad if proof is that the money was his. I do not see any law that prevends anyone from getting his money from the bank. Why was it called robbery? Explain better to the public.
Let on zealousness over come us.

I am just laughing about this article, does this guy really expects us to believe he has made "billions" from his business "empire"?

Based in kamwokya and u couldnt clearly define what it is they do?
Business website full of family pictures? sorry i cant stop laughing at this, even Kiwewesi who's in deeper water would tell u this guy's finished! anyway his all lifestory has "money laundering" over it.

I know many more guys like him, always at the casinos flashin cash, they r all theives, so the guys at kampala casino(opps) be warned, ur time's coming

Just see the circles with in which Kashoma has been mingling and then you will understand what all along this time has been causing suspission and discomfort regarding the disproportionate distribution of wealth and resources. It is all concetrated in one particular part of people. And Kashoma is fortunate to rein from it. THIS IS PURE DIVERSION FROM THE NSSF SAGA.

UGANDANS WISE UP AND WAKE UP FROM THE DEEP SLEEP!

Wow, am just waking up from a very long bad dream and also learning that sometimes we just have to love our people even when some or the majority seem to suffer from What Mr. Dominic Otim talked about.

All in all, I thank those that have tried to think deeper and been kind to my name so far and forgive those that seem to have passed judgement without facts.

I pray that we are cured from the mob justice tendencies in our country, Until it happens to you or someone you know, you will never understand how much it hurts.
God bless you all and will one day get a chance to clear my name. I love my head connected to the rest of my body thus will not indulge in details at this time. For God and my Country.
